Six Preston’s College construction learners are celebrating after scooping first place in the recent north west SkillBuild 2018 regional qualifiers.
Oliver Ogden, Conor Stephenson and Jonathan Homer scooped gold in the senior competition for brickwork, painting & decorating and joinery respectively while Jake Wilson, Bradley Carroll and Nathan Cousin took top spot in the juniors for brickwork, painting & decorating and plastering.
SkillBuild, delivered by CITB, is the largest multi-trade competition in the UK for construction trainees and apprentices.
The competition, which took place at The City of Liverpool College, brings together students from colleges across the region to compete against each other in a range of trades.
Three learners will now progress onto the national finals at Birmingham’s NEC to represent the North West region and battle it out over three days to be crowned the best in the UK.
Mark Taylor, Head of School for Construction at Preston’s College, said: “This result highlights the quality of full-time and apprenticeship provision in a variety of trade areas at Preston’s College.
“We ensure that learners gain their skills in purpose built, real work environments, to replicate the trade and learn from tutors who still have an active role in the industry.
“Working alongside the Central Lancashire Construction Skills Hub, we ensure that learners are apprenticeship ready and have a wealth of learners actively looking for employment with a local employer.”
