On 25th February 2025, Ribble Valley MP Maya Ellis spoke in Parliament during the second reading of the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education (Transfer of Functions etc) Bill, drawing attention to the critical role of Preston College, a founding member of the Lancashire and Cumbria Institute of Technology, in addressing the region’s skills gaps and driving forward economic growth.
Speaking passionately about the importance of skills development in tackling the UK’s pressing workforce challenges, MP Ellis highlighted how she witnessed first-hand how the college’s innovative IoT curriculum is helping local industries, including mental health, construction, engineering, and counselling, provide the right education and skills. This curriculum is developed with direct input from employers across the region to ensure it meets the needs of the workforce.
During her visit to Preston College, MP Ellis had the opportunity to meet with staff and students, and hear about their experiences with the college’s technical training programs. Of particular note was the college’s collaboration with Leyland Trucks, which identified a need for electric vehicle training for apprentices. As a result, the college were able to pivot to the industry need by refining its curriculum to meet this need, showcasing its agility and responsiveness to industry demands.
MP Ellis also discussed the importance of adult education, with Preston College serving as a integral provider of opportunities for adult students in the region. While she welcomed the upcoming devolution deal in Lancashire, which will give local organisations more control over adult education budgets, she raised concerns about potential reductions in adult skills funding that could impact Preston College’s ability to continue its vital work in areas like construction, English & maths, engineering and digital skills.
“What really blew me away at Preston College was the feel of the college! It feels inspiring, modern, a place to really grow, where people feel truly supported and at home.” MP Ellis said.
