Fashion, Theatre and Media Make-Up Student from Preston College Wins First Place at WARPAINT

Preston College Fashion and Media Make-Up Student, Benjamin James, has won 1st place in the Student Awards at the Warpaint competition, winning a grand prize of £300 worth of products from two professional cosmetic companies, as well as being offered a place at Salford University continuing make-up media and prosthetics.

Benjamin James is in his second year of his course and will be continuing his studies at the University of Arts London; London College of Fashion, studying Makeup, Hair and Prosthetics for Performance. It has been his goal of his since secondary school to study at this prestigious university. “Without Preston College and the course, I wouldn’t have received an offer from the top fashion school in the world. A big thank you to Preston College and all the staff that have allowed me to continue a dream and make it a reality.”

The final makeup look consisted of a clean base with eyeshadow on the left eye, circling the eye with loose shimmer pigment, to fit within the theme of Schiaparelli – paying homage to the continuing influence and creativity of the House of Schiaparelli, twisting this into his own technology and AI inspired look. Founder and Creative Director of Shelen Cosmetics, presented the award quoting “truly a masterpiece”.

Jane Tudor, Head of School for Visual, Digital & Performing Arts says, “We are extremely proud of Ben’s achievement. He is an excellent student who has developed very high levels of skills, and he fully deserves this recognition.”

After winning the award, Benjamin said, “I simply can not describe in words the feeling I experienced when my name was announced other than joy, satisfaction and hope. To be recognised by my own work by industry professionals is a great achievement and has allowed me to network within different sectors and grow.”

Benjamin also stated, “The Fashion, Theatre, Media Make-up and Hair course has allowed me to grow my skills by the industry professionals that teach the course. Lisa Anderson and Jordayne Whitefield have provided me with the knowledge from multiple aspects of their own career and experiences. The syllabus on the course offers a wide range of different sectors of the industry, from prosthetics to wigs, bodypainting to fashion editorial. With this wide range I’m able to complete all these aspects to a high standard. This course has allowed me to have industry experience with University of Central Lancashire as ‘Makeup Artist’ for the marketing campaigns which are seen all over Preston.”
