This course is ideal if you are new to welding, metal fabrication, thermal cutting and brazing and soldering. This programme will enable you to gain knowledge and practical experience within the field and achieve a formal qualification in Metal Inert Gas welding.
For individuals without prior welding qualifications or industry experience, MIG is often the starting point for you to enter industry and is a requirement for you to study on other welding programmes with us, such as TIG or MMA.
MIG is a welding process that allows multiple parts to be welded in quick succession in areas such as steel frame furniture, door frames, car body repairs and engineering production factories.
This intensive course option is held over 1 week (Monday to Friday) between 9.15am to 4.00pm.
WHAT WILL I LEARN?
This course will provide an intensive introduction to:
Health and safety
Principles of the MIG welding process
Identification of controls and settings
AC/DC power supply and their application
Types of filler wire
Identification of shielding gases
Joint designs application and preparation
Weld fault investigation and rectification
HOW WILL I BE TAUGHT?
This is a highly practical course, meaning you can expect to spend the majority of your learning in the welding bays, with the remainder of your time being spent in the classroom, learning underpinning theory that ultimately supports all practical projects.
HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?
In order to achieve the qualification you must undertake and pass five practical assignments, consisting of welding joints in simple positions (horizontal) and one oral knowledge test. Successful completion will evidence your competence in the MIG welding method.
WHAT CAN I DO NEXT?
Completion of the MIG module provides opportunities to progress onto another welding process at Level 1 such as TIG or MMA. Once two or more welding processes are achieved, you will be able to study on the more advanced Level 2 Certificate in Welding at Preston College.
IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE I NEED TO KNOW?
As a welding learner you will be required to wear appropriate PPE at all times and will be therefore need to purchase PPE items which will include:
Steel toe cap boots
Flame retardant overalls
Preston College recognises that kit costs can be a worry, but you may be entitled to financial support from the college bursary. You can purchase these items independently, but you must bring these to your first lesson.
