This occupation is found in the advanced manufacturing engineering and engineering construction sectors. The broad purpose of the occupation is to carry out metal fabrication work using things such as rolled steel joists, columns, channels, steel plate and metal sheet etc.
Work includes manufacturing bridges, oil rigs, ships, petro-chemical installations, cranes, platforms, aircraft, automotive and machinery parts, sheet metal enclosures, equipment supports, and anything that can be fabricated out of metal. Fabricators can work alone or in teams, in factories or on operational sites.Fabricators use a large range of metals including steel, aluminium and titanium at a range of thicknesses from 0.5mm up to over 20mm. The size and weight of the fabrications can range from components that can easily be picked up by hand, to massive structures that require several cranes to manipulate.
You wil be technically trained in the work place during a minimum of 4 days a week with a day release to college. You will be assigned a designated work based tutor who will visit you in the work place to support you through your qualification right through to End Point Assessment.

On completion of the level 3 you will be able to progress onto the level 4 engineering pathways.
An apprenticeship at level 3 requires you to complete, or be working towards a level 2 in Functional Skills for Maths and English. Depending on your prior attainment level, you may be required to complete an initial assessment to check suitability for entry onto the programme. If you have already achieved GCSE grades at C/4 or above, you may be exempt from completing this as part of the apprenticeship Additionally, it is expected that you will have already achieved the relevant level 2 industry related qualification in order to progress on to the level 3, and be working in a suitable role in order to complete this apprenticeship. Furthermore, all candidates will have an interview with the Apprenticeship Specialist to assess suitably before being accepted on to an apprenticeship programme.
