WHAT WILL I LEARN?
You will develop your knowledge and understanding of light vehicle maintenance, the programme will include:
Identifying the principles for routine maintenance checks.
Understanding the operating principles of light vehicle engines such as fuel, ignition, air and exhaust systems. You will also focus on the tyres, brakes, steering and suspension operating systems.
Operating principles and maintenance of light vehicle transmission systems such as starting and charging systems. You will also learn electrical systems such as electric windows and interior/exterior lighting for example.
Health and safety in the workplace and further skills associated with the workshop environment will be implemented throughout the duration of the course.
HOW WILL I BE TAUGHT?
You'll start by developing your background knowledge on vehicle components and operating systems and then progress to the workshop area where you will find cars, diagnostic equipment and the tools you need to develop your practical skills and experience.
HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?
Your assessment throughout the duration of the programme will require you to write up a portfolio of the work you have completed to achieve the diploma. This will also include any practical based work you have undertaken in your sessions.
WHAT CAN I DO NEXT?
On successful completion of the course to a high standard, you can progress on to our Level 2 Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance, where you will be able to take a hands-on approach to your learning to give you a practical experience of the industry.
IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE I NEED TO KNOW?
You will be required to wear safety boots and appropriate overalls for the duration of the programme for health and safety measures.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Whilst formal English qualifications are not required for direct entry on to this programme, you will need to possess proficient English skills that will enable you to fully participate in all aspects of your learning and successfully achieve your qualification.
Your level of English skills will be assessed during the application process and will be determined by any previously obtained qualifications or via an English assessment, where appropriate.
In order to engage in the guided on-line learning components of your programme and to undertake modular assessments, the development of your digital skills will be at the core of our delivery and embedded throughout your full programme of study.
In addition, you will need access to a digital device. If these are not available to you at home, you are able to use the college facilities.
