This course is ideal if you are looking to start a career in engineering. It will provide you with a broad knowledge of modern engineering industries and specialist knowledge of advanced manufacturing, designed to give you a clear pathway to the wide range of career opportunities available.
WHAT WILL I LEARN?
Engineering maths (algebra, trigonometry and statistics)
Engineering Science (mechanical principles, physics – dynamic systems, Newton’s laws of motion, velocity, acceleration, momentum, forces, moments, energy and power.
Electrical/electronic principles (Ohm’s law voltage, current and resistance. Lenz’s law, magnetism Faradays laws, motors and generators)
Design engineering (design, CAD, manufacturing)
Project (research based unit requiring a unique solution to a given engineering problem

WHAT CAN I DO NEXT?
This course allows progression to university level courses at Preston College in a range of engineering subjects. You can choose to gain higher level skills in electrical engineering by studying one of our HNC engineering programmes.
IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE I NEED TO KNOW?
For workshop activities you will need to purchase suitable overalls and steel toe capped work boots at a cost. Progression to year two is dependent on successful completion of year one. This qualification forms part of the Level 3 apprenticeship framework. There are a range of enrichment activities available including trips to exhibitions, trade shows and local companies.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
You will need five GCSEs at grade 9-4 (A* to C) including English Language, Maths and Science or a Level 2 Diploma at Merit or Distinction Level in Engineering. You will also be required to attend an interview.
