BARBERING - LEVEL 2

Level: Level 2

Barbering is a great career for people who are creative and dedicated to providing an excellent customer experience. Barbers use their creative flair to cut and style men's hair achieving a range of looks. You need to be personable and able to establish a rapport with your customers, be a good listener and be able to understand how your customers want their hair styling.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

You will study a range of units (mandatory and optional) designed to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills you need to become a barber, such as, relevant anatomy and physiology, health and safety, customer service, shaving and creating facial hair shapes, environmental sustainability, commercial skills, problem solving and research skills.

Mandatory Units:

  • Advise and consult with clients
  • Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp
  • Develop and maintain your effectiveness at work
  • Cut men's hair using basic techniques
  • Cut facial hair to shape using basic techniques
  • Dry and finish men's hair
  • Create basic outlines and detailing in hair

Optional Units:

  • Shaving services
  • Colour and lighten men's hair

Additional Units:

  • Preparing to run a business and wellbeing qualifications.

HOW WILL I BE TAUGHT?

You will receive first class training from our own resident Master Barber in our bespoke Barber Shop which is right on the High Street at the College. The Barber Shop is a flexible work environment which combines theory sessions with technical skills development and is kitted out with industry standard, high quality equipment and chairs.

WHAT CAN I DO NEXT?

Learners who achieve this qualification are eligible to become a State Registered Graduate Barber (SRGB) with the Hair Council and join the British Barbers' Association.

As a junior barber, you could progress directly into employment in a variety of contexts, which include:

  • Commercial barber shops or salons
  • Specialist African type barber shops/salons
  • Self-employed barber operating independently, mobile, or in home-based settings.

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE I NEED TO KNOW?

Enrichment activities are an important part of the learner experience so you will have the option to complete work experience and get involved with local charitable events, skills competitions with AHT in Blackpool or the Lancashire Skills Colleges, and have access to regular visits and demonstrations from expert barbers in the industry, many of whom are past students and business owners.

You will need to wear all black for the workshop sessions and comfortable footwear.

All equipment and products will be provided in our well stocked Barbershop.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

You need four GCSEs at grade 3 (D) or above including English Language and maths. The other subject should have a minimum of grade 2. You will also be required to attend an interview to discuss your suitability for the course.
