The automotive industry is constantly innovating with hybrid technology, electric vehicles and improvements such as assisted parking, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connections, sat nav, cameras and sensors all becoming standard features. In order to be successful in this industry you'll need to know the basics before you progress to advanced level diagnostics and this course is your first step in understanding light vehicles (cars and vans) and how they operate.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

  • Light vehicle routine maintenance
  • Operating principles of light vehicle engines, tyres, brakes, steering, suspension and systems
  • Operating principles and maintenance of light vehicle transmission systems and electrical and electronic systems
  • Health and safety
  • Customer service skills

HOW WILL I BE TAUGHT?

You'll start by developing your background knowledge on vehicle components and operating systems and then progress to the workshop in the iSTEM Centre where you will find cars, and the tools you need to develop your practical skills and experience.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

You will complete projects to show your skills and this will be part of your assessment. You will also complete practical tasks in the workshop, assignments and online multiple choice tests.

WHAT CAN I DO NEXT?

This qualification along with a successful progression interview allows progression to the Automotive Maintenance & Repair - Level 2 course. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

You will need a profile of mainly grade 2s at GCSE including English Language and maths. You will also need to attend an interview to show interest in the subject and a willingness to learn.
