APPLIED SCIENCE - LEVEL 3

Level: Level 3

Studying Science will take you into all sorts of fascinating careers. The UK is particularly strong in aerospace, biotechnology and medical technology.

On this course you will have the opportunity to study a range of science modules and units focussing on Chemistry and Biology. Your units are linked to the application of science and will develop your investigative skills.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

Year 1: Principles & Application of Science 1; Practical Scientific Procedures & Techniques; Science Investigation Skills; Laboratory Techniques & Application; and Physiology of Human Body Systems.

Year 2: Principles & Applications of Science 2; Investigative Project; Contemporary Issues in Science; Applications of Organic Chemistry; Forensic Evidence, Collection & Analysis; and Genetics and Genetic Enginering.

HOW WILL I BE TAUGHT?

The majority of your lessons will be in laboratories where you’ll be carrying out practical experiments, writing up scientific reports or preparing posters and presentations for your assignments. Some theory lessons are classroom based or in IT rooms. 

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

There are a variety of assessment methods including; examinations, written coursework, presentations and practical experiments. You will be assessed throughout the programme.

WHAT CAN I DO NEXT?

This course is the equivalent of three A-Levels and worth up to 168 UCAS points depending on your grades. This allows progression to related degree programmes at universities across the country including the University of Central Lancashire. Alternatively you may seek employment in the industry.

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE I NEED TO KNOW?

You’ll need to buy a laboratory coat for practical work and equipment such as a folder, pens, pencils and a scientific calculator.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

You need five GCSEs (or equivalent) at grade 9-4 (A*-C) including English Language or Maths with a minimum grade 3 for the other subject. You will also need GCSE Combined Science or grade 4 (Cs) in two of the following: GCSE Biology, Chemistry and Physics, or a Level 2 Diploma in Applied Science at merit level.
