The purpose of this programme is to enhance your knowledge and awareness of children and young people’s mental health. The programme focuses on children and young people aged between 5 to 18 years old.
The programme will provide an introduction to understanding young people’s mental health concerns and the factors that may increase the risk of mental ill health in children, together with the exploration of how these risk factors can be mitigated.
This programme will support your progression into further learning within this field, or advancement into relevant employment within health, social care and the education sectors.
Studied on a part-time basis, as part of the programme you will focus your studies on five core units:
Understanding children and young people’s mental health in context
-An insight into the concept of mental health
-The relationship between mental health and wellbeing
-The prevalence of mental health in children and young people
-The legislation and guidance that applies to young people’s mental health
-Societal views of mental health; stigma, cultural attitudes, influence of the media
Understanding factors which may affect young people’s mental health
-Risk and protective factors that may affect mental wellbeing
-The effects of developmental changes on the mental health of young people
-The different types of abuse and bullying and its effect on mental health and wellbeing
-The impact of identity and self-esteem on mental health
Understanding mental health concerns
-Behaviours that indicate concerns about young people’s mental health and wellbeing
-The importance of early intervention
-Understanding stress, anxiety and depression in young people
-Specific mental health conditions
Understanding the impact of young people’s mental health concerns
-The effects of mental health conditions on family life, relationships and education
-The impact on others; living with a young person with mental health conditions
-Exploring the range of services available to support young people
-The importance of diagnosis
Supporting young people with mental health concerns
-Person-Centred support for young people
-Recovery models
-The rights of young people with mental health concerns
-Promoting mental wellbeing
-Services, treatments and therapies
You will be taught via interactive sessions and you will be required to participate in task assessments during delivery. Throughout the programme you will be required to complete a workbook for final submission
Upon successful completion of this course, you may choose to progress onto additional study with us, in your chosen field. Preston College offer a wide range of short courses in a variety of other subjects, as well as a selection of adult courses at different levels in Health and Social Care.
You should be working to a Level 1 standard in English and must be able to demonstrate an interest in this subject.
