UNDERSTANDING AUTISM - LEVEL 2 CERTIFICATE

Level: Level 2

This course is ideal for you if you wish to develop an understanding of autism and enhance your ability to support individuals on the autistic spectrum, whether you are a parent, carer, educator, or healthcare professional. 

This qualification will provide you with the essential knowledge and skills to progress within a variety of professional settings, in job roles where an understanding of autism and knowledge of how to support autistic individuals is required, whether this be in education, early years, healthcare and the voluntary sectors.

If you are currently supporting individuals with autism, as part of your job role or aim to gain future employment in this area, on this programme you will gain some key competencies that will prepare you for employment within the sector or enhance your existing skills within the workplace.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

Introduction to Autism

- theories relating to autism

- diagnosis of autism

- characteristics of individuals with autism

- co-occurring conditions

 

Person-centred approach to support autistic individuals

- legislation and guidance that underpin support for individuals with autism

- techniques to support individuals using person-centred approaches

 

Communication and social interaction in autistic individuals

- understanding speech and language and communication in individuals with autism

- differing social interaction and strategies to support communication for individuals with autism

 

Sensory processing, perception and cognition in autistic individuals

- processing of sensory information

- recognising and supporting sensory needs

- understanding the functioning differences of autistic individuals

 

Supporting positive behaviour in autistic individuals

- understanding behaviour in the context of autism

- supporting positive behaviour

- developing coping strategies

           

Supporting autistic individuals to live healthy and fulfilled lives

- supporting individuals to maintain personal safety

- the purpose of positive risk taking

- supporting individuals with transitions and life events

- supporting individuals to access services and facilities

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

Assessment on programme will comprise of various methods that will evaluate your knowledge, skills and competencies that have been acquired throughout your studies including:

  • case studies

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Whilst formal English qualifications are not required for direct entry on to this programme, you will need to possess proficient English skills that will enable you to fully participate in all aspects of your learning and successfully achieve your qualification.

Your level of English skills will be assessed during the application process and will be determined by any previously obtained qualifications or via an English assessment, where appropriate.
