This course is designed to equip you with the foundational skills and knowledge needed to start a career in the engineering industry. You will explore various aspects of engineering and gain hands-on experience in multi-skilled technical roles, which will help you determine your specific career.
Introduction to Engineering: Gain a broad overview of the engineering sector, including career opportunities and the impact of engineering on society.
Health & Safety in Engineering: Learn essential health and safety practices in an engineering environment, including risk assessment and accident prevention.
Engineering Materials: Understand the properties, uses and selection of different engineering materials.
Basic Engineering Techniques: Develop foundational skills in using engineering tools and equipment for basic tasks.
Engineering Drawing & Design: Learn to create and interpret engineering drawings, using both manual techniques and computer-aided design (CAD).
Electrical & Mechanical Principles: Study basic electrical and mechanical principles, including circuits, forces and motion.
Practical Engineering Project: Apply your knowledge and skills to complete a hands-on engineering project, demonstrating your ability to plan, execute and review an engineering task.
You will be taught by industry experienced tutots in classrooms and workshops. The iSTEM Centre is equipped with a range of industry equipment and tools and IT rooms. You will be able to carry out practical experiments, write up reports, produce technical drawings in CAD and complete theory work.
You can progress to the Engineering - Level 2 course providing you meet any additional entry criteria. Alternatively you could seek employment as an apprentice. We have a range of engineering apprenticeships including the Level 2 Engineering Operative Apprenticeship.
You will need a profile of mainly grade 2s at GCSE including English Language and maths. You will also need to attend an interview to show interest in the subject and a willingness to learn.
