This qualification is a Level 2 and is appropriate for individuals who are interested in developing counselling skills. It is intended to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills required for a counselling role and to engage in a helping relationship covering common themes across all counselling related vocational qualifications: communication, personal reflection, theories and diversity. It is also designed to help you develop necessary skills and knowledge needed to volunteer in the helping professions.
WHAT WILL I LEARN?
As part of the programme you will focus your studies on four core units:
Counselling Skills and Personal Development
-Reflection of your current and future personal development and identifying potential sources of support
-Developing self-understanding
-How self-reflection contributes to personal development
Using Counselling Skills
-The development of core counselling skills for use in helping relationships
-Establishing appropriate boundaries
-Agreeing objectives and developing strategies
-Concluding helpful relationships
Introduction to Counselling Skills Theories
-Developing knowledge of three counselling theoretical approaches enabling a link to be made between counselling theory and skills (Psychodynamic, Person-Centred and Cognitive Behavioural)
-Understanding how counselling theory underpins counselling skills
Diversity and Ethics in the Use of Counselling Skills
-The contexts and ethics relevant to the use of counselling skills
-Key aspects of ethical frameworks
HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?
You will be assessed through a range of methods including a portfolio of evidence, workbook, group presentations and practical skills observations.
WHAT CAN I DO NEXT?
This qualification provides a useful progression route into further study or work; it is not a license to practice. You can progress to a Level 3 Certificate in Counselling Skills or other related health and social care course at an appropriate level.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Whilst formal English qualifications are not required for direct entry on to this programme, you will need to possess proficient English skills that will enable you to fully participate in all aspects of your learning and successfully achieve your qualification.
Your level of English skills will be assessed during the application process and will be determined by any previously obtained qualifications or via an English assessment, where appropriate. You should understand this course involves personal reflection and commitment to self-development, this can be challenging and it is important you have an awareness of this before entering the course. This course is not suitable for personal therapy. An enhanced DBS check is not required for this Level 2 course, however, if you choose to progress to Level 4, a Foundation degree or beyond, a full, enhanced DBS check will be required.
