PLUMBING - LEVEL 2 DIPLOMA (SEPT 2025 START)

Duration: 36 weeks
Level: Level 2

The Level 2 Plumbing course is ideal for those with some experience in the trade, looking to develop and expand on their current skills.

Through a mixture of hands-on, practical sessions and theory based study, you will explore a range of key methods, principles and processes used in the plumbing industry.

You do not need to be working in industry to undertake the qualification, the qualification enables you to demonstrate your skills, knowledge and understanding, within the realms of the training environment.

You will engage with a range of modules, including domestic hot water systems, cold water systems, drainage systems, electrical principles and much more.

Successful completion of the Level 2 course may provide opportunities for progression onto the Level 2 bridging courses here at Preston College.

Please note: This course starts in September 2025. You may apply now; however, applications will not be processed until enrolments open in April 2025. A course advisor will reach out once we can proceed with your application.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

As part of the Level 2 Plumbing course you will study a range of modules, including:

  • Electrical principles and processes for building services engineering
  • Health and safety in building services engineering
  • Scientific principles for domestic, industrial and commercial plumbing
  • Common plumbing processes
  • Cold water systems
  • Domestic hot water systems
  • Sanitation
  • Central heating systems
  • Drainage systems
  • Communication with others within building services engineering
  • Salamander pumps

HOW WILL I BE TAUGHT?

As a plumbing learner at Preston College, you will perfect your skills in practical workshops consisting of four purpose built bays, which include a toilet system set up, basins and hydraulic bench, all of which are used throughout the course to practice and develop specific abilities.

Learners will have their own bench, for the duration of the course, allowing all to perfect their skills in their own space and at their own speed. The course comprises of 50% practical work and 50% theory, with the workshops, part of the wider construction department, replicating a live, working environment that provides a real flavour of what life in industry is like.

The course begins with basic drilling and screwing and concludes with all learners being able to competently fit a full bathroom suite. The course aims to test and challenge plumbing skills, whilst providing progression opportunities, to the bespoke bridging courses here at Preston College, for the most competent of learners.

As our on-site facilities reflect industry working practices, you will be required to purchase and wear suitable PPE, including work boots and overalls or clothes that you do not mind getting dirty – plumbing can be a messy job!

 

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

You will be assessed through a range of practical assignments, online multiple choice tests and external assessment.

WHAT CAN I DO NEXT?

Upon successful completion of this course, you may have the opportunity to progress onto the Level 2 Plumbing Bridging course here at Preston College. Further details will be provided by your tutor, at the end of your Level 2 course.

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE I NEED TO KNOW?

The nature of the Level 2 Plumbing course means that whilst this is a very practical programme, there is theory behind the practical that has to be learnt. As a result, learners can expect to spend 50% of their time undertaking practical tasks and 50% of their time in the classroom - this typically works out as one evening per week completing practical and one evening per week completing theory based learning.

In order to develop your technical skills, you will be required to purchase professional equipment including:

  • Appropriate Safety Boots
  • Overalls (OR old clothes that you do not mind getting dirty)

All other equipment will be provided.
