MAP03 ENGINEERING DESIGN, QUALITY & PRODUCTION

Duration: 12 weeks
Level: Level 4

The MAP03 Engineering Design, Quality & Production module, delivered as part of the Modular Acceleration Programme (MAP) pilot, is designed to provide additional engineering industry training and education, while equipping you with employable skills that can be immediately applied in the sector. Furthermore, this MAP module offers the flexibility to complete a single module over 12 weeks, allowing you to upskill and earn valuable credits without committing to a full qualification straight away.

On this module you will explore the methodical steps engineers use to create functional products and processes, both individually and as part of a design team. You will learn how to optimise production processes and facilities for manufacturing products from different materials, and also covers quality assurance concepts and tools to ensure products meet required industry standards. By combining these topics, you will gain a holistic perspective on the engineering product lifecycle from design through manufacture to final inspection.

This MAP module is derived from to the HNC Construction Management for England (HTQ) which aligns with the knowledge, skills, and behaviours required for specific job roles according to the relevant Occupational Standards. It is also recognised as an Institute of Technology (IoT) course, with a particular emphasis on enhancing digital literacy within the engineering sector.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

Engineering Design

  • Creating design specifications in response to design briefs
  • Technical solutions to implement design specifications
  • Producing design reports considering manufacturability and environmental impact
  • Presenting design solutions to stakeholders

Production Engineering for Manufacture

  • The role and purpose of production engineering
  • Production processes and facility arrangements for different material types
  • Production systems: incorporating different processes for a product
  • Production systems within the wider manufacturing context

HOW WILL I BE TAUGHT?

The course is designed to be completed over 12 weeks, through a combination of guided learning and independent study. You will have the opportunity to work individually and collaboratively to apply your learning to real-world scenarios.

Independent study means learning activities you will do on your own time, outside of the scheduled lectures, workshops, and case studies.

Examples of independent study include

  • Additional reading on industry trends and best practices
  • Watching software tutorials and practicing your modelling skills
  • Researching case studies and real-world examples to inspire your projects.
  • Completing quizzes and assignments to check your understanding
  • Reflecting on your progress and setting goals for improvement
  • Collaborating with your classmates on group projects and discussions

As a learner on this course, you will also have access to our virtual learning environment, Canvas, for additional resources to support your studies.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

This module will be delivered through a blend of lectures, workshops, case studies and directed self-study. You will have the opportunity to work individually and collaboratively to apply your learning to real-world scenarios.

Formative assessment and feedback throughout the course will support your progress towards the final summative assessment.

HOW MUCH WILL THIS COURSE COST?

The course is fully funded by the government as part of the Modular Acceleration Programme (MAP) pilot. This means that if you meet the eligibility criteria, you can study this course without paying any tuition fees.

WHAT CAN I DO NEXT?

The Engineering Design, Quality & Production course (MAP) offers the opportunity to develop a range of technical and transferable skills that are highly valued in the engineering sector and can support career progression, further study, and personal development.

Career Options and Progression Opportunities

Upon successful completion of the course, learners may consider the following progression routes:

  • Combining MAP03 with other engineering MAP modules to build credits towards full Higher Technical Qualifications (HTQ)
  • Further study through a HNC/HND in Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering or Quality Assurance
  • A higher or degree apprenticeship in Engineering Design, Manufacturing Engineering or Quality Management
  • Applying for technician or associate level roles in engineering design, production or quality
  • Continuing professional development for existing engineering professionals, working towards Incorporated or Chartered status
  • Pursuing certifications in specific engineering software applications or quality methodologies to demonstrate skills to employers
