Laboratory technicians work in a wide range of organisations, including but not exclusively, chemical, primary and secondary pharmaceutical, biotechnology, formulated products, nuclear companies; and analytical science services. A laboratory technician may carry out both routine and one-off laboratory testing and perform a variety of technical support functions across the organisation. In any context working safety and ethically is paramount and many companies operate under highly regulated conditions because of the need to control the quality and safety of products, for example medicines. Laboratory technicians are expected to work both individually and as part of a laboratory team.
WHAT WILL I LEARN?
You will be expected to develop a range of occuptaional skills and knowledge, some of which include:
Work safely in a laboratory, maintaining excellent housekeeping whilst following appropriate safety, environment and risk management systems
Understanding and following quality procedures to meet the requirements of quality standards relevan to the workplace.
Understanding the internal and external regulatory environment pertinent to the sector and the employer and comply with regulations proficiently
Preparing for laboratory tasks using the appropriate scientific techniques, procedures and methods
Performing laboratory tasks following specified methodologies, such as Standard Operating Procedures
HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?
You will be assessed in the following ways:
Review of behaviours evaluation log
A synoptic assessment test
A vocational competence discussion
Scenario case study
WHAT CAN I DO NEXT?
You could progress to further qualifications or Higher Education courses. Once qualified, you might find yourself working in a research laboratory, hospital laboratory, environmental science laboratory or laboratory within an educational establishment.
IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE I NEED TO KNOW?
Apprentices ideally must have a keen interest in science and have either gained work experience or can evidence suitable qualifications in this area.
Duration: 24 months, plus End Point Assessment
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
All Apprenticeships require an initial assessment, interview and employment in the industry. Apprentices without a level 2 English and mathematics will need to achieve this level prior to completion of their apprenticeship.
