KITCHEN FITTING - LEVEL 2 DIPLOMA

Level: Level 2

This Level 2 Diploma in Fitted Interiors is an ideal starting point if you are interested in pursuing a career as a Kitchen Fitter. On this course you will develop the required skill and competence to follow technical plans and specifications, and to create professionally finished kitchens in domestic and commercial projects.

You will develop technical skills such as; measuring and planning a kitchen, building carcasses from flat pack, fixing base units and hanging wall units, cutting worktops using mason’s mitre, routers, jig and circular saws and aligning and hanging kitchen doors.

Utilising the appropriate tools and equipment you will also learn how to effectively cut out sinks/hobs, pelmets, fit kitchen drawers and edge worktops to industry standard.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

As part of the Level 2 Kitchen Fitting course, you will study five core modules, including:

Installing Basic Plumbing

- Preparing for basic plumbing installations including gravity fed systems, circulating pump and unvented combi systems

- Isolating gas, electricity and water supplies prior to removing existing fixtures and fittings 

- Installing plumbing fixtures to manufacturer guidelines, specifications and building regulations; cutting, bending and fixing copper and plastic pipes, using ancillary equipment such as spacers, brackets and retaining hardware

- Connecting hot and cold-water supplies using compression

- Using appropriate tools to remove and install basic plumbing

Installing fitted furniture

- Preparing to install fitted furniture according to manufacturer’s instructions, specifications, plans and drawings

- Understanding different types of finishes such as veneers, laminate, solid hardwood, stone and resin and the different types of wall and floor unit layouts

- Identifying the work requirements for different types of fitted interior appliances; cutting and modifying units to fit, free standing and tower units, re-routing pipework for plumbing and waste, movement of appliances and considerations of sockets, switches and supply

- Developing appropriate methods for fixing units to different wall constructs and floor finishes; brick, block, plasterboard, concrete tiles or screeded floors or wood-based floors

Understanding Information, quantities and communication with others

- Interpreting and producing construction information; drawings, programmes of work, technical specifications, building regulations, bills of quantities and order requisitions

- Understanding construction drawings; symbols and hatchings; brickwork, timbers, sub soil, Damp proof course and damp poof membrane

- Estimating quantities of resources; quoting, estimated pricing, labour rates, tender processes, materials, deviating from the specification

Understanding Construction Technology

- Understanding the principles of foundation construction; Structural stability of foundations, aggregates such as cement, water, steel and concrete

- Methods of wall construction; solid masonry, timber frame, partition, cavity masonry

- Understanding floor construction; suspended timber, concrete, floating and block and beam. The principles of solid screed, raft and pad foundations

- Understanding the supply of utilities and services; Drainage, water, gas and electricity.

Health & Safety

- Knowing health & safety regulations; RIDDOR, COSHH, PUWER and HASAWA

- Identifying, preventing and reporting hazards on site

- Storing and using materials and equipment safely

HOW WILL I BE TAUGHT?

We recognise that as an adult learner you may have busy work/personal and financial commitments to balance alongside your studies; as such, we deliver a flexible model that integrates three hours per week of practical study that will be delivered on campus, plus an additional 4-6 hours per week of guided independent on-line study. This approach offers a flexible and convenient way for you to gain the theoretical knowledge alongside your technical skills. 

You will have access to a full scheme of work, on-line resources and self-assessments via our learner management service “CANVAS”. You will receive a full induction on how to navigate this platform together with guidance from your tutor on completing your mandatory on-line modules.

If you prefer to undertake some of your on-line study in college or require some additional learning support, you have access to a weekly tutorial that will help you keep on-track with your studies

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

Assessment on programme will comprise of various methods that will evaluate your knowledge, skills and competencies that have been acquired throughout your programme of study. 

You will undertake a series of controlled practical observations, submission of workbooks, on-line assessments and multiple-choice exams at the end of each module

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE I NEED TO KNOW?

As our Construction Centre reflects industry working practices, you will be required to purchase and wear suitable Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including work boots and overalls (or old clothing).

On this course you will be provided with a FREE basic kitchen fitting tool kit that will include: Screwdrivers, Spirit levels, Panel Saw, Tote Bag, Tape measure and Small quick release clamps,

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Whilst formal English qualifications are not required for direct entry on to this programme, you will need to possess proficient English skills that will enable you to fully participate in all aspects of your learning and successfully achieve your qualification.

Your level of English skills will be assessed during the application process and will be determined by any previously obtained qualifications or via an English assessment, where appropriate.

In order to engage in the guided on-line learning components of your programme and to undertake modular assessments, the development of your digital skills will be at the core of our delivery and embedded throughout your full programme of study.

In addition, you will need access to a digital device. If you do not have access to a digital device at home, you are able to use the college facilities.
