Theatrical Media Make-Up is an exciting career for people who are creative and have a passion for hair and beauty in the performance and media industries. It is a competitive career but with the right skills, experience and hard work you can open up a world of opportunities.
On this course you'll be introduced to the artistry of hair, make-up and special effects make-up for the stage. Working closely with our Performing Arts department and through external work experience you will develop and refine your creative skills and build your portfolio of work.
Please note: This course starts in September 2025. You may apply now; however, applications will not be processed until enrolments open in April 2025. A course advisor will reach out once we can proceed with your application.
WHAT WILL I LEARN?
Units may include photographic make-up, health and safety, client consultation, how to create an image based on a theme, dressing hair, body art, themed face painting, plaiting and twisting hair, make-up application and casulty simulation.
You will develop your knowledge and understanding of the skin, health and safety, hair and media make-up products and equipment. You will also develop a range of technical skills in skin preparation, make-up application and a range of basic technical hairdressing skills.
HOW WILL I BE TAUGHT?
You will be taught by experienced tutors who have worked and continue to work in the industry. You will have practical and theory based sessions to develop your skills.
HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?
There will be some external assessments and classroom and workbased activities that contribute to the development of your portfolio.
WHAT CAN I DO NEXT?
You can progress on to the Fashion, Theatre and Media Make-Up Level 3 Diploma. Completion of the Level 3 qualification makes you eligible to become a member of the British Association of Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology (BABTAC), and get insurance to practice professionally.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Whilst formal English qualifications are not required for direct entry on to this programme, you will need proficient English skills at Level 2, that will allow you to fully engage in your studies and successfully achieve the qualification. Your level of English skills will be assessed during the application process, based on any prior qualifications or through an English assessment if needed.
Additionally, you will also need to attend an interview to assess your suitability for the course.
