CYBER SECURITY - LEVEL 1 AWARD

Do you know how to keep yourself and your organisation cyber secure in an ever-changing digital landscape?

With cybercrime on the rise globally, and the tactics used becoming increasingly sophisticated, it has never been more important to protect yourself against cyber threats. This cybersecurity course is designed to improve your online safety.

You will learn effective IT user skills and awareness to help you unlock the potential of your computer and the programmes you use. You will gain confidence and awareness in key cybersecurity issues, which in turn will help keep yourself, your data and others safe from cyber criminals. You will also learn the common forms and tactics of cybercrime and explore the different methods that you can use to maintain and protect your online security. 

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

As part of this course, you will focus on the following: 

The different forms of cybercrime and possible motives: this will focus on how cybercrime can affect indiviuals and organisations; including, phising, identity theft, hacking, advocating terrorism-related acts, email and Internet fraud, theft of financial data (card payment data and corporate data). 

Identifying the tactics used by cybercriminals to defraud people

The importance of cybersecurity testing: highlighting the protective measures that can be put in place to become cyber secure, such as practising diligence, installing appropriate anti-virus software, turning on firewall, protecting personal information browser safety, and avoiding emails from unknown sources. You will also learn how to effectively conduct cybersecurity testing in order to reduce the risks of a potential attack, and highlight any vulnerabilities from potential hackers.

Understanding how to use user access controls on a network or operating system to allow various permission and restrict access. ​

The identification of protections for and responsibilities of individuals and organisations as set out in key legislation.

Ethical and unethical conduct in relation to cybersecurity: highlighting adherence to organisational IT policies and procedures, maintaining confidentiality, adherence to applicable laws, promoting information security, and refraining from conflicts of interest. Unethical conduct could include: sabotage, disclosing or misusing confidential information, maliciously injuring the reputation or prospects of an individual or organisation.

HOW WILL I BE TAUGHT?

This course is classroom based and you will be taught by highly experienced tutors, all of whom have a passion for IT.

The course will be delivered in a classroom over a 12 week period, 3 hours per week. 

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

You will be assessed through building a portfolio of evidence. 

WHAT CAN I DO NEXT?

This qualification provides a useful progression route into further study or work. For those looking to further develop their digital skills, you could progess onto other related digital skill based courses or other adult courses available at an appropriate level. 

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE I NEED TO KNOW?

This course offers flexible learning options, where you can attain this qualification at your own pace in the Digital Skills Hub (located at Preston College), even while you are already in education or in full-time employment.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Entry requirements for this level of study, includes progression from an Essential Digital Skills Entry Level 3 or Level 1 qualification or a good working knowledge in Word Processing and Excel is an advantage.
