BRICKLAYER

At Level 2 you will develop your basic bricklaying skills which will include: laying bricks, blocks and other types of building components in mortar to construct and repair walls, foundations, partitions, arches and other structures.

Bricklayers lay bricks, blocks and other types of building components in mortar to construct and repair walls, foundations, partitions, arches and other structures eg chimney stacks. They might also refurbish brickwork and masonry on restoration projects. The range of sites and projects that bricklayers will work on include large commercial developments, new builds in housing, alterations, extensions and restorations. A bricklayer may work one-on-one or on larger jobs where their bricklaying group (gang) may work on a particular section of a building alongside other bricklaying gangs as well as other trades.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

You will the technical skills and develop your knowledge in the following areas: Carrying out safe practices; Quantities and communicating with others; Building methods and construction technology; Interpreting working drawings; Setting out masonry structures; Thin joint masonry; Wall cladding; Solid walling; Isolated; Attached piers; and Cavity walling.

You will learn modern methods of construction, rapid build technology, alternative block, masonry, steel and timber based cladding systems; set out and build brickwork, including complex arches and surrounding brickwork, curved on plan, concave and convex brickwork and battered brickwork; select materials and resources required to set out and build fireplaces and chimneys using materials such as hearths, plinths, flue liners, chimney pots and other modern methods; interpret drawings and specifications; measure the work area and set out level first courses of bricks to a plan, including bonds for openings and the damp course ad mix mortar by hand or with a mechanical mixer.

You will be conscientious, punctual, enthusiastic, reliable and professional including appearance; take responsibility for personal judgements and actions; be aware of the limits of personal competence; show drive and energy in fulfilling requirements of role, including deadlines and being proactive not reactive; show honesty and integrity by developing the trust of customers and colleagues and undertaking responsibilities in an ethical and empathetic manner and demonstrate awareness of equality and diversity in all aspects of role.

 

 

HOW WILL I BE TAUGHT?

The course is mainly practical and will be taught in a purpose built brickwork workshop. The underpinning knowledge will be classroom based and you will be expected to do your own research for the various assignments and NVQ work based evidence.

WHAT CAN I DO NEXT?

Successful completion at Level 2 may allow progression onto a Level 3 Apprenticeship. Completion of the Level 3 programme can then lead to further or Higher Education. You will also have developed all the necessary skills and knowledge to work confidently within the industry.

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE I NEED TO KNOW?

During the practical aspect of the programme you will be required to bring your own personal protective equipment in the form of safety boots and a high visibility vest as you will be working within a workshop environment for most of the time. Although all other tools and equipment are provided you will need to purchase stationery items for use in the classroom such as folders, pens, rulers etc.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

An apprenticeship at level 2 requires you to complete, or be working towards a level 1 in Functional Skills for Maths and English. Depending on your prior attainment level, you may be required to complete an initial assessment to check suitability for entry onto the programme. If you have already achieved GCSE grades at E/2 or above, you may be exempt from completing this as part of the apprenticeship. Please note, that depending on grades previously achieved, you may be expected to upskill towards a level 2 in Functional Skills Maths and/or English. Furthermore, all candidates will have an interview with the Apprenticeship Specialist to assess suitably before being accepted on to an apprenticeship programme.
