An Apprenticeship is a job that provides hands-on experience in your son/daughter’s chosen industry whilst earning a salary. It is a great way for those who enjoy practical learning to earn whilst learning, with successful completion providing not only invaluable experience in their chosen field but also a nationally recognised qualification.
At least 6 hours a week of your son/daughter’s job training will take place away from the work place, usually through a day release at college.
Preston College advertise a variety of vacancies all year round. Current vacancies can be found here. Those interested in applying for an apprenticeship should research the industry and qualifications to ensure that it is something they’d like to pursue. If you have any specific questions about the apprenticeship/or the attached qualification you can contact Preston College and speak to an Apprenticeship Specialist on 01772 225768.
Like all jobs, different apprenticeships have different entry requirements, depending upon the industry and level.
Your son/daughter can apply for an apprenticeship at any time. Every apprenticeship is different, and some may have specific start times to line up with the delivery of the qualification, whereas others can be started immediately (if the young person has completed their school education). We would encourage applicants to apply as soon as they are certain that they would like to pursue an apprenticeship. The reason being, the sooner we receive your son/daughter’s application, the sooner we can start matching them with potential employers and vacancies.
The length of an apprenticeship depends upon the type of apprenticeship chosen, the level being studied and the applicant’s previous experience. Typically, an apprenticeship can take between one and six years to complete, with roles being offered in a wide range of sectors and companies nationwide.
An apprentice will work a minimum of 30 hours per week and will be treated just like all the other employees, with a contract of employment, a salary and an annual leave entitlement.
Yes! Those who apply for an apprenticeship aged between 16 to 18 years old will receive a minimum wage of £4.81 per hour but employers can choose to pay more than this and many do.
The industry, location and type of apprenticeship chosen play a big part in determining a salary.
No. Those aged 16 to 18 receive training for free through Government funding but it is worth considering that like other employees, apprentices will be required to cover their day-to-day expenses, such as travel and lunch costs.
No, not at all. Apprenticeships are available in a wide variety of sectors nationwide, ranging from traditional Apprenticeships in industries such as Construction and Hairdressing, to Engineering and Marketing apprenticeships. Apprenticeships are now also available right up to degree level, meaning your son/daughter could secure a degree whilst earning a full-time wage.
We understand that apprenticeships can be confusing and you may have a lot more questions to ask. We have a dedicated apprenticeship team at Preston College, available to answer any additional questions. You can contact the team on 01772 225768 and ask to speak to an Apprenticeship Specialist.
