Preston College University Centre Selected to Support Evolving Technical Skills in the Area

Preston College is proud to announce that we have been selected as one of the leading members of the newly established Lancashire and Cumbria Institute of Technology (IoT), a £290 million government-backed investment which will enable the College to deliver the very best in technical education.

Working in collaboration with 6 further education colleges and 3 Higher Education Institutions across the region, Preston College will focus on delivering cutting-edge technical courses and provide outstanding skills-based training across multiple industries, including Construction, Engineering, Counselling, and Social and Community Work.

Simon Nixon, Principal and Chief Executive, says “We are thrilled that Preston College has been chosen as one of a select few Colleges in the region to launch the brand-new Lancashire and Cumbria IoT.

As a college we understand and value the role that we play in our local community. We are dedicated to ensuring that we adapt to the ever-evolving needs of our employer partners, and offer educational opportunities for those learners in the area looking to develop the technical skills required for the local job market.”

He adds: “The launch of the Lancashire and Cumbria IoT is a welcome addition to the educational fabric of our region, which will in turn not only drive economic growth but also provide learners with the knowledge and skills needed for high-quality, technical jobs.”

The Institute of Technology (IoT) initiative was first launched back in 2019, with various institutes already established across regions in the UK.

Preston College is offering a range of courses and apprenticeships, supported by the Lancashire and Cumbria IoT scheme, with enrolments already underway. The official launch of the Lancashire and Cumbria IoT is planned for late summer, with government funding enabling the development of industry-standard facilities and equipment.

Equipment and resources will include a torsional load testing machine, a robotic arm, 3D scanners and printers, and the development of The Digital Innovation Lab offering high specification computers and innovative collaborative working spaces. All of which will enable Preston College’s University Centre to deliver cutting-edge education and training, further reinforcing our reputation as a leading provider of IoT, Higher Education, and Professional Skill courses.
