Learners Congratulated by City’s Mayor
Mayor of Preston, Counsellor Trevor Hart, visited Preston’s College to present six learners with special awards after the group triumphed in a national high speed rail competition earlier in the year.
Back in July 2018, three Construction and three Engineering learners came together to fend off competition from other Further Education Colleges in the NCOP HS2 ‘Fast Trackers’ competition.
Taking place in front of industry and government representatives at University College London, the competition centred around the well publicised High Speed Two (HS2) which is set to be the backbone of the national rail network, linking up 8/10 of the country’s largest cities.
Learners were tasked with creating a redesign of London’s Euston Station before planning and costing a route for the proposed high speed rail link between London and Birmingham. Read more about the learners’ original win here.
Mohammed Hussain (18), Josh McGinley (18), Rafe Jiva (18), Lizzie Andrews (20), Choice Odumeru (19) and Ethan Caskey (18) each received a certificate from Councillor Hart, who went on to congratulate the group about their achievement and the quality of teaching and learning at Preston’s College.
Mark Taylor, Head of Construction at Preston’s College, said: “We ensure our learners are regularly involved in enrichment and competition activities to help translate their knowledge and skills gained in the classroom into an industry specific setting.
“Preston’s College aims to make its learners the most employable and this is demonstrated in the learners’ success in the HS2 competition.
“On behalf of the College, I would like to thank the city’s mayor, Counsellor Trevor Hart, for taking the time to congratulate our learners on their achievement.”
Talking about the experience, Level 3 Construction learner, Josh McGinley, added: “During my time in the HS2 Fast trackers experience we learned the fundamentals of construction and performed it in front of hundreds of people including the CEO of network rail.”
Fast Trackers is a collaborative project between the North West NCOP Consortia, to provide young people an insight into the opportunities in the Engineering Sector via Higher Level Study.
The Fast Trackers event was organised by Future U, a collaborative project bringing together universities, colleges, schools and businesses from across Lancashire to help empower young people.
