On Monday 25th May, United Makeup Artists Expo (UMAE) hosted their first live, in person, Warpaint makeup competition in over two years. Taking place in Liverpool, they welcomed a high volume of contestants from a range of colleges. Emma Rutherford, Warpaint’s Editorial Director, hosted the competition, and gathered a collection of industry experts to judge the looks the students designed and created. Students competed in Bodypainting – themed “all the world’s a stage”, Creative – themed “sacred spaces”, Fashion – themed “geometry”, Character – themed “the Marvel universe” and Bridal – themed “international bride”. The judges were impressed by the high standard, making it a tough decision to choose the winning looks. A huge congratulations goes to Preston College learners Faye Smith and Erin Livermore! Warpaint Victory! AHT Awards Hair and beauty learners from a selection of 14-16 and adult courses competed in the AHT regional competition at Blackpool’s Norbreck Conference Centre. With ambitions of securing a place in the top three, to progress to the national finals, adult learners competed in the blow dry and evening style competition categories, with current first year learner, Mariam, securing third place in the blow dry category – a win which saw her compete in the category at national level. Wins for some of our youngest learners were also secured, with Year 10 learners Keila and Megan and Year 11 learner, Millie, impressively winning first, second and third place respectively in the prom make-up category. Year 10 learners Chloe and Martha also competed in the evening style category for their age group, both securing participation certificates, as did adult learners Immie and Jasmine. Fiona Birtchett-Sharpe, Head of School for Service Industries commented, “Participating in a range of competitions is an integral part of all of the hairdressing programmes here at Preston College, providing learners of all ages with opportunities that extend well beyond the realms of their in-salon and classroom based curriculum. Working under pressure, to set deadlines and as a team, these experiences provide additional insight into the vast world of hair and beauty and showcase a breath of industry opportunities that go beyond in-salon work.” Well done to everyone who participated in the competition!
