The Most Autumn Winter 2021/2022

07 Making Chemistry with Local Employers Science learners were given a extraordinary day at Incorez, a chemistry based lab and manufacturing plant, located in Preston. Receiving a tour of the premises, the learners also met the team. The visit provided an opportunity for learners to see the facilities first hand, with the potential of securing an industry placement at the company as part of their T-Level programme at Preston College. Ian Martin, Technical Manager, welcomed the learners and college staff on a guided tour, allowing the learners to ask questions and speak to staff, as they went about their daily tasks. During the tour Ian explained that he too had always had a passion for science. During his four year degree he embarked on an industry placement to help support his learning and provide an understanding of the value of placement experiences. It was from these industry placements that gave Ian the enthusiasm for the industry and the varied roles in science. Ian explains: “During one of my placements, I took part in research and product development and I knew then that that role was what I wanted to pursue. I was in awe of the people working around me and what they were doing. My mentor during the placement had a PhD and so that’s exactly what I did. I am now lucky enough to be able to offer the same opportunities to learners wanting the same career as me. The first student I took on almost 10 years ago on placement, is still working here. Our most recent industry placement learners are all from different local universities. It’s such a great way for learners to gain insight into the industry. It is a great opportunity for students to develop but also gives current staff here opportunities to mentor others, developing themselves and supporting personal development. Our internal staff will also mentor the T-Level students.” Lucy Watson, Tutor for Science at Preston College said: “It was such a great day. To be able to take the learners to a science organisation on the college doorstep was a real privilege. Ian has a real passion for his specialism and it was brilliant for our learners to see this first hand and to learn about the principals of research and product development. We are really excited to potentially have one of our learners undertake their work industry placement at Incorez, it will give them real insight into this incredible industry.” Ian Martin welcomes our science learners to Incorez 23
