| 13 “Before joining the service, I had gone to sixth form and completed my A-Levels. Being an apprentice is a good opportunity to learn new skills whilst also earning a wage at the same time. I’ve been able to meet many different people from all different departments and it has helped me become more confident as a person. With the amount of apprentices within MFRS, there are people who are in the same situation as you at similar ages which helps ease you into a possible big jump from education to employment and helps you to make friends and gain a social aspect from work.” RYAN, 21 “I was offered a place at Liverpool John Moores University to study Mechanical Engineering, however after numerous apprenticeship offers, I chose this route. The apprenticeship has given me four years paid experience and worldwide recognised qualifications on specialist vehicles and equipment. The qualifications and knowledge I will gather will stay with me for life and allow me to return to university later if I so wished. Should I decide to change my career it will also give me a good foundation to move to other mechanical based jobs around the world. Many people don’t take into account the back of house staff in the fire service, it’s a demanding job. People had the expectation of me going to university and are surprised I haven’t. I have no regrets I made the right choice.” JOHN, 21 “Working as an apprentice for MFRS is great, I have built up my communication skills, confidence in speaking on the phone and I have learned how the team works. I also work closely with other staff members and departments which is so valuable. I think some people’s reactions are that because I’m an apprentice I won’t get much work or I will get all the easy tasks, but for me that’s not the case. I have taken on some big roles that will help the team run smoothly.” CONNOR, 19
